School Governors’ One-Stop Shop (
SGOSS) is a highly successful and well regarded charity that exists to recruit volunteers with transferable skills to join governing bodies in schools in England. It recruits volunteers across all employer sectors, and works in partnership with authorities and schools to secure mutually beneficial placements. During the course of 2011 it will secure a placement for its 12,000th volunteer.
It has ongoing and valuable working relationships with the National Governors Association and Co-Ordinators of Governor Services.
SGOSS offers a very effective and proven service making best use of technology and electronic communications. Schools are able to register their vacancies online, specifying category of vacancy and any particular skills they would like the volunteers to offer. As details of vacancies are received they are referenced against the SGOSS data base of volunteers. If relevant applications are on file these will be passed on within 48 working hours. If there is no-one suitable, recruitment will be initiated through supporting employer networks or, in agreement with the school or college, among the wider local community.
