Clerking Matters

Welcome to Clerking Matters

The Clerk is one of the most important people that a governing board will work with. Clerking Matters seeks to raise both the status and professionalism of governing board clerks by providing guidance and links to support specific to the role. Here you will find easy access to a wide range of relevant resources and topics including clerking best practice, statutory guidance and legisaltion, clerks news, information on clerking as a career and regular updates on the NGA Clerks Advisory Group.

NGA has launched Clerking Matters with four main aims:

to increase the understanding of the importance of the work of clerks and what can be expected of a well-trained clerk
to help governing boards find good clerks where there is difficulty in doing this
to help clerks know where continuing professional development can be found
to encourage appropriate remuneration of clerks

The NGA has campaigned for a number of years for the role of clerk to the governing board to be professionalised. NGA believe that an effective clerk is vital to effective governance and that all governing boards should seek to recruit high-quality professional clerks and pay them appropriately.

It is widely recognised that an effective clerk is a key element in the success of any governing board.

While there is a widespread consensus that professional clerking is a good thing, clerks are often not provided with the support necessary to achieve their role. Clerking Matters is a key resource bank for clerks, putting essential reading, helpful guidance and tools all in one place.
