Governing boards are expected to hold school leaders to account for the educational performance of pupils in their school or trust. This is primarily achieved through monitoring progress against expectations and priorities set out in school improvement plans.

This page explains the fundamentals of effective monitoring, including:

  • using information gained from data and school visits
  • evaluating what the information is saying about the level of progress
  • asking the right questions and always driving for improvement

In multi academy trusts, the trust board should have oversight of how trust-wide and individual school improvement plans align, and how schools in their trust are held to account for pupil attainment and progress by their executive teams and the local tier of governance.
