Why Join the NGA?

The NGA website

Our website is the information source for governors, with a public section containing general information and events, plus a members' area,  detailed up-to-date guidance, an education glossary for governors, a forum, briefing notes on NGA campaigns, information about our links with other education organisations, reports on ministerial lobbying and analysis of government initiatives.

NGA magazine

Our magazine 'Matters Arisng' is a high quality colour magazine written by and for governors, and published five times a year. The NGA magazine offers thought provoking articles on all aspects of education and governance.

Welcome to Governance

An information and guidance booklet for new governors - and a useful resource for experienced governors.

NGA Papers

Detailed information summaries on a wide range of school governance issues, including:  being a governor, the role of the chair, effective governors’ meetings, special needs in schools and head teacher recruitment.

NGA Policy

These policy statements outline the NGA view on a whole range of issues, from academies to special needs. The NGA works hard to develop policies that reflect what governors are thinking, and once we have formed a policy, we work equally hard to persuade policy makers in government to take those views into account.

NGA conferences

The NGA runs national conferences, and a number of regional events. Our conferences are free to NGA members, draw high profile speakers – including ministers – and have looked at a whole series of key issues facing governing bodies, including: head teacher recruitment, extended schools, workforce remodelling and pupil assessment.

NGA support

The NGA is run by an elected board made up of active school governors. We have a national office in Birmingham, with professional staff who work hard to support NGA members across the country. We can respond to questions from individual members, and we support governing bodies and local associations.

All this for just £55 for a governing body, less than the cost of a new tyre on the school minibus. As governors you must value and promote professional development opportunities for your head and teaching staff. But what of your own professional development?

Who supports governors? - The NGA does.
