NGA Statement on the Academies Bill

28/05/2010

"Parents must be consulted on academies" says the National Governors’ Association

Governing bodies of outstanding schools will soon begin considering whether to convert into academies. The NGA was disappointed that the Secretary of State did not send his letter of 26May to chairs of governors given that this vital decision will be made by governors.

The NGA is dismayed that the Academies Bill, published on the same day, allows such a fundamental change in the designation of the school to be carried out without any requirement to consult local stakeholders. It appears to fly in the face of the Coalition Government’s intention to give parents a greater say in education. In its first piece of education legislation the government has effectively disenfranchised local communities.
