NGA comments on strike action over teachers' pensions

04/05/2011

The National Governors’ Association warns that children could be the losers in the fallout over the forthcoming proposals on teachers’ pensions

School governors want to see staff properly rewarded for their crucial job, and the employment terms set so as to attract the best people into the profession. The NGA cannot see how the Government would achieve its aims of attracting first class graduates into the profession if they offer third class conditions of employment. Governors do not want to see teacher morale destroyed. There are already many changes for schools to cope with and school improvement must remain the focus. Any industrial action will impact first and most damagingly on the children in our schools, for whom any time lost now can never be recovered. The last thing governors want is for children to be caught in the middle of a dispute between the unions and the Government. Their interests should be paramount.
