This NGA Guide aims to help governors carry out their accountability role.
For each legal duty or responsibility the Guide sets out:
- What a governing body has to do
- How the governing body may delegate the work
- How a governing body can ensure that their school is meeting legal requirements
The three key roles of a governing body are to set the strategic direction of their school, ensure accountability, and monitor and evaluate school performance. Governing Bodies have to fulfil these roles against a backdrop of nearly a hundred separate legal duties and requirements; it is no surprise that many governing bodies struggle with the task.
Wherever possible the three sections of this Guide will be laid out on a single page for easy reference. The Guide will offer additional resources – such as flowcharts and model reports – to enable governors to work effectively.
A key section on each page will offer questions and reporting structures that will help Governing Bodies and Heads to work together effectively to keep their schools within the Law.
This NGA Guide is particularly relevant. The Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Bill gives the Local Authority and/or the Secretary of State the power to remove governing bodies that fail to comply with legislation.
