The NGA is not opposed to testing; the governing body is responsible for the overall performance of the school and so governing bodies must have access to the information required to monitor and evaluate achievement and to both support and challenge the professional staff of the school in their important work.
It is widely recognised that an effective clerk is an invaluable resource for a governing body. The NGA believes that all governing bodies should employ a skilled clerk. In recognition of the importance of the clerk to a governing body the NGA developed the biennial Outstanding Clerk of the Year Award.

The NGA firmly believes that all governing bodies should adopt an allowances policy and that all governors should claim.
NGA policy is formulated by the elected board of the association. Any individual governor, governing body or governors' association in membership can influence NGA policy through feedback, representation and debate at regional and national meetings and through electronic contact.
One of the NGA’s core objectives is to promote high standards of education in schools, colleges and other educational institutions. The NGA supports the notion that every child should able to attend a good local school.
The NGA broadly supports the aims and principles of inspection, and welcomes partnership with Ofsted on behalf of pupils and schools.
The NGA does not believe that the office of Parent Governor Representative is properly defined. The lack of clarity leads to varied practice throughout the country.
