Federation

The NGA encourages governors and governing bodies, while retaining their key focus on the welfare and achievement of their school’s pupils, to look beyond their own walls and to work constructively with partners including other members of the local family of schools.

This might occasionally lead to formal federation but much more commonly is better achieved by other means, which have existed across the country for many years, with various degrees of formality as judged appropriate by those best placed to know – the local governors and leaders of those schools

The NGA strongly believes that the decision to federate or not should be taken in the light of the circumstances facing individual schools. We are not in favour of a policy of federation as the answer to perceived difficulties of either resources or leadership, and we oppose overt or concealed government pressure to force through federations.
