Parents
The NGA believes that parents are central to their children's education and development, and that all schools should work hard to maintain and develop good two-way relationships with the parent body.
Good schools encourage parents to play an active role; this may include fund raising, participation in individual lessons and school events, and the lending of specific expertise – but above all in encouraging their children in their schoolwork and behaviour, and taking an active interest in their learning by engaging with the school.
Governors can play a key role in the home-school relationship and the NGA believes that parent governors are key stakeholders on the governing body.
However:
The NGA remains unconvinced by the government's rationale for the setting up of parents' councils: in our view the proper route for the representation of parents' views is through the governing body, where parent governors can act to influence the school's direction and policies. Another body such as a parents’ council needs to be properly defined particularly in relation to the governing body, including its place as another channel through which governors consult parents.
