NGA Policies
England's 300,000+ school governors form the largest volunteer group in the country and are drawn from all walks of life. Governors share a belief in the value of education alongside the conviction that all children have the right to attend an effective school, where their individual talents and abilities can be recognised and developed.
School governing bodies are established in law as corporate entities. Their main responsibility is to determine the aims and overall conduct of a school with a view to promoting high standards of achievement. Specific duties of governing bodies include: appointing headteachers, setting staffing levels, setting and agreeing the school budget, monitoring health and safety, overseeing the management of school premises and ensuring the effective delivery of a broad and balanced curriculum.
The governing body has strategic responsibility for planning within the school; implementation and management is the role of the headteacher and staff.
The National Governors' Association
The NGA promotes the work of governors at the national level. We work closely with and lobby Government and the major educational bodies to ensure that the views of governors are fully represented in the national arena.
The NGA supports governors with information, guidance and training.
The NGA has a national network of experienced governors who can offer individual support to governors and governing bodies.
NGA policy is formulated by the elected board of the association. Any individual governor, governing body or governors' association in membership can influence NGA policy through feedback, representation and debate at regional and national meetings and through electronic contact.
