We are now recruiting for NLGs

Being an NLG is an opportunity to further impact the education and wellbeing of children and young people by improving the effectiveness of governance in the schools and trusts which need it most. It also offers a new challenge and development opportunity for experienced governors and trustees, governance professionals and governance consultants across England who meet the criteria. As a self-employed role it offers flexibility, as well as full training and support as part of an influential team. Gaining NLG status through the reformed programme is a great recognition of the skills, experience and credibility you have developed through your dedication to school or trust governance.

Eligibility to become an NLG 

NGA will recruit, train and deploy a high calibre team to deliver support. The high standard of NLGs required is reflected in the eligibility criteria. Applications are welcome from all who meet the criteria including: 

  • current NLGs,  
  • governance professionals,  
  • governance consultants, and  
  • governors and trustees.

How to apply

If you would like to support governance in schools or trusts with governance challenges, have a track record of improving governance and meet the eligibility criteria, NGA would be delighted to consider your application.

Please ensure you have read the eligibility criteria carefully.  Your application form will be assessed against the DfE’s established NLG standards and must be completed in full. Incomplete applications will not be considered, nor those received after the deadline. 

To apply to be an NLG, you must complete and submit the application form, case study template and equal opportunities monitoring form (a total of three attachments) by email to NLGrecruitment@nga.org.uk by 9am on Thursday 29 July 2021. We encourage you to apply as early as possible. You will be asked for:

  • Personal details
  • Your background and experience
  • Two case studies evidencing a track record of improving governance 
  • Details of two referees

What happens next

All applicants will be informed as to the status of their submission by email by 24 August 2021. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview (either face to face or virtually via Zoom) held between 9 August and 25 September 2021.

Interview process

A competency based interview with a panel of NGA senior staff will be held. This will include delivering a short presentation to the panel. The content of the presentation and all relevant information will be included in the invitation to interview. Successful NLGs will be appointed by the end of September 2021.

NLGs must be available to attend two virtual half-day pre-deployment training sessions on either 30 September and 1 October, or 5 and 6 October.

Employment arrangements

It is expected that NLGs will undertake an average of between six and eight reviews a year. However, this will depend on the scope of the review eg those undertaking trust reviews, which will be more wide ranging and time consuming, may undertake fewer than those undertaking single school reviews. 

NLGs will be self-employed and engaged on this basis. There will be no guarantee of work, which will depend on demand and NGA’s judgement as to an NLG’s suitability for an assignment. Work will be assigned to NLGs in accordance with their track record and relevant expertise, geographical proximity and availability to complete the work.

NLGs will be paid on a self-employed basis on a rate per assignment of £500 per day. NLGs may charge VAT if they are registered to do so. 

Mileage is per deployment and not claimable for the first 100 miles. Mileage incurred over that is claimable at 45p per mile as per the guidance set out by HMRC. The role is IR35 compliant. See the job description for more information.
