DfE Advisory Group on Governance

The Department for Education's Advisory Group on Governance (AGOG) advises and assists the Department. AGOG provides a forum for representatives to raise and discuss issues of general principle and detail affecting school governance. It has the following aims:

  • To provide a forum for members to raise and discuss issues of general principle and detail affecting school governance, in particular on ways of improving the effectiveness of school governing bodies and their role in promoting high standards of educational achievement.
  • To advise and assist the Department for Education in the development of national initiatives concerning training, supporting and recruiting school governors.
  • To promote and advise on improved arrangements for collaboration, partnership working and promoting best practice.
  • To enable the DfE to keep members informed about national initiatives affecting governing bodies.

Its members are drawn from a variety of governor representative organisations, including:

  • Association of Directors of Children’s Services (ADCS)
  • Association of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools (AGBIS)
  • Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL)
  • Catholic Education Service (CES)
  • Church of England Board of Education (CEBE)
  • Freedom and Autonomy for Schools National Association (FASNA)
  • Information for School and College Governors (ISCG)
  • Local Government Association (LGA)
  • National Association of Headteachers (NAHT)
  • National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL)
  • National Co-ordinators of Governor Services (NCOGS)
  • National Governors’ Association (NGA)
  • Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED)
  • SGOSS - Governors for Schools
  • Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT)
