I run my own independent clerking business and have to have exceptional planning, co-ordinating, diary, time management and organisational skills to ensure that agendas, minutes and reports are produced within tight schedules. Therefore I have to work accurately, to a high standard and pay attention to detail. I have proven ability to communicate with people at any level, dealing with parents, companies and staff face to face and on the telephone has never proven difficult for me. Confidentiality and business integrity in my work goes without saying!

I provide an effective and efficient clerking service to support numerous school governing bodies and ensure that the Governors’ responsibilities are undertaken professionally and in accordance with governance legislation. I advise them on points of governance legislation and procedural matters where necessary before, during or after meetings. Naturally I take notes of Governing Body meetings to prepare minutes, including indicating any agreed action points and record all decisions accurately and objectively with timescales for action.

I have introduced my IT skills to the role and maintain a database of names, addresses and categories of School Governors, including each Governor’s term of office and maintain lists of membership of committees, working parties and nominated governors and keep copies of terms of references for such committees and working parties, naturally advising governors and appointing bodies of the expiry of their terms of office so as to allow for elections or appointments to be organized in a timely manner and facilitating the procedures. It is of utmost importance that I maintain confidentiality of information acquired in the course of undertaking duties for all the Schools in which I work.

Nick has well over 3 years’ experience of supporting governors and clerks to governors in providing advice, training and support in a variety of areas. Recognising that schools sometimes have a real issue in recruitment of clerks to governors.

Having also been a clerk to governors, he has now taken his knowledge and skills into a Clerking service (since 2016) for schools who find themselves without a clerk to governors for some reason, or who may need an experienced clerk to cover meetings as required.

Aims of the service –

In an increasingly busy environment, a trained clerk to governors is becoming very difficult to recruit, and for some schools who recruit from existing staff to take on the job as an additional role, they are experiencing increased difficulty in ensuring that the role remains a separate one from the alternative role of the member of staff.

Nick Rich Clerking Services aims to remove the difficulty for schools, in providing a trained clerk to governors to undertake the role for you as soon as you engage our services. National advice states that it is vital that governing bodies appoint a high quality clerk to advise them on the nature of their functions and duties and ensure they operate efficiently and effectively to enable them to promote higher standards.

I have been a Clerk since 2009 and have recently achieved the National Clerk Accreditation, with Merit. I am currently a Clerk to the Governing Body of a free school, an academy, a maintained school and a maintained nursery.

I have covered hearings, appeals and disciplinary meetings as well as Governing Body meetings. I have Pitman shorthand skills of 150 words per minute so can cover meetings where a tape recorder is not allowed. I advise my Governing Bodies on new legislation on a regular basis and can turn minutes around next day if needed. I live in Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands but have transport and I am happy to travel.
