In 2013 National Governance Association (NGA) and the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives (SOLACE) hosted a roundtable discussion with a range of expert organisations including: National Co-ordinators of Governors’ Services (NCOGS), Association of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools (AGBIS), Ormiston Academy Trust, Association of Director of Children’s Services, Information for School and College Governors (ISCG) and Hampshire County Council.

It was generally agreed that the critical issues facing school governing body clerks were: lack of understanding of the importance of a trained clerk, the need to pay clerks appropriately for a professional job, and how governing bodies can source good clerks.

The NGA and SOLACE agreed to take the lead and develop a short statement outlining what clerking is and the expectations we should have on clerks - you can see this in the Governing Matters article 'Clerking Matters'. We have also updated the model job description for clerks. The aim of this is to raise the importance and professionalism of governing body clerks.

Clerks to governing bodies of both local authority maintained schools and academies can also now access guidance specific to their role in the 'Guidance' section of the members' area. Here you will find detailed guidance on a range of topics, including organising meetings, recording information, advising the governing body and how the school is governed.  This guidance has been developed exclusively for NGA members, and Governing Matters is only available to members. If you are not a member, find out more about the many benefits of membership and how your governing body can join the NGA.

As part of our on-going Clerking Matters campaign, the NGA launched a clerking service to help governing bodies find clerks. If you are a clerk who is available to offer your services and would like to appear on this section, please download and complete the Clerk form. Alternatively if you are a school/organisation with a vacancy, please download and complete the Organisation form

Please return completed forms to Rani or post it to NGA, 36 Great Charles Street, Birmingham, B3 3JY.
