Developing an effective governing board

It is important that every governing board reviews its performance as a whole and NGA recommend that this exercise is carried out internally annually. Governing boards may also wish for an external perspective on their performance, or an external review may be recommended by Ofsted.

This two hour session focuses on how the new DfE Competency Framework for Governance, recruitment procedures and the management of the board can help ensure that your organisation gets the right people around the governing board table.

Your governance framework: Understanding the role and responsibilities

This two hour session is designed as an overview and can be delivered to governors of maintained schools, or trustees of single academy trusts or multi academy trusts.     

Your governance framework: Good relationships and effective meetings 

This two hour session examines how to promote good relationships so that meetings are properly effective.  

Being strategic: An introduction to strategy 

This two hour session focuses on the strategic board and introduces the Framework for Governance.

This session looks at the options for governing groups of schools from federation to forming or joining a MAT.

This session looks at the issues governors and trustees should be aware of when considering forming or joining a MAT.

Being strategic: Managing risk

This two hour session introduces the concept of risk, risk management techniques and some of the risks school organisations should be considering.

Holding to account: Performance management 

This two hour session covers the basic principles of performance management and how the governing board should lead and manage the process. 

Holding to account: Knowing your organisation-safeguarding 

This two hour session focuses on the governor and trustee role in ensuring that their organisations are safe places for pupils.

Holding to account: Knowing your organisation-safer recruitment

This two hour session looks at the issues that governors and trustees must be aware of when recruiting staff for their organisation.

Holding to account: Knowing your school-the data and beyond

This two hour session will raise governors’ and trustees' awareness of the data sources, the extent to which they can be analysed, and other means by which governors and trustees can get to know their school.  

Holding to account: Knowing your organisation-using data in your organisation

This two hour session covers the key data sources and also covers how pupil progress and attainment is measured in your organisation.

Holding to account: Knowing your school-understanding pupil premium

This two hour session looks at the governor and trustee role in ensuring that the pupil premium is used effectively.  

Holding to account: Knowing your organisation-the effective governance of SEND

This two hour session covers both the requirement to comply with guidance and the practicalities of holding the school to account for the performance of pupils with SEND. 

Holding to account: Knowing your organisation school-governor and trustee visits

This two hour session will develop governors’ and trustees’ understanding of why visits matter, their purpose, and the framework that needs to be established to enable effective visiting to take place.

Panel work 

This two hour session covers the principles of panel work and the practicalities of setting up a panel for hearing complaints, reviewing exclusions or disciplinary hearings.

Question, challenge and courageous conversations

This two hour session on the approach governors and trustees should take when questioning and challenging and when, and how, to conduct a courageous conversation.

Financial oversight: Financial management in your organisation

This two hour session will raise governors' and trustees' awareness of their responsibilities for financial oversight, ensuring value for money and making an impact.

Preparing for Ofsted

This session introduces the Ofsted framework, explains how the inspection process works and outlines what governors and trustees will need to know.
