About the Young Governors' Network

The Young Governors’ Network (YGN) aims to support and encourage those aged under 40 to govern in schools by facilitating them to share their experiences, addressing the challenges faced by young people governing schools and creating sustainable connections amongst current and prospective governors. YGN is member-led: created and run by young governors with support from the National Governance Association and Inspiring Governance. YGN is a community of interested, intelligent, creative and questioning young people committed to improving schools for everyone.

Informal networking events

Our refreshed YGN events provide an informal opportunity for young governors to meet and share their experiences.

These informal networking events will inlcude a facilitated discussion on 'balancing support and challenge' and aim to equip young governors with valuable insight and ideas to take back to use in their governor role and usefully contribute to their own professional development, as well as helping them to forge relationships with other young governors in their area.

All serving governors/ trustees aged under 40 are welcome at YGN events – attendees do not need to be a member of the NGA or YGN, so please do share this information with your governing board and networks. If you, a friend or colleague is interested in finding out more about being a governor, please do come alon

Why under 40?

The NGA/ Tes annual school governance survey 2017 of over 5,300 school governors and trustees found that only 10% of respondents were under 40, and just 1.1% were under 30. According to the Charity Commission the mean age of a charity trustee is 57, which is similar to our survey findings.

We believe that governing boards should reflect the community they serve and wider society, and that increasing diversity on boards should be a priority for all schools. Supporting young governors, and growing the number of young people involved in school governance, is essential to bringing a broad range of perspectives to discussions and decisions, providing roles models for young people and enables governing boards to have a greater connectedness and insight in to the world pupils live in. We are encouraging more young people to get in to school governance with our Everyone on Board campaign.

Joining the YGN

If you’re a young governor, it could really help to speak to others about your experiences. Email your name, school and location to ygn@nga.org.uk to join the YGN - it's free to join and you don't need to be an NGA member. You'll be the first to know about our upcoming events, have the opportunity to join our closed LinkedIn group to meet other young governors (launching September 2018) and receive a half-termly newsletter with the latest information of interest for young governors. You'll also be invited and encouraged to share your own experiences and ask questions to other young governors and governing boards though our communications channels. Follow us on Twitter.

Not under 40 but still want to help?

Whilst the network serves young governors, the support of all governors and trustees is greatly appreciated. Please encourage young governors on your governing board and in your network to attend our events and register their interest. You could also make a point of bringing your young governors along to NGA member events, and speaking to them to ensure they feel confident and effective in their role.

We'd also love to hear from you on a range of themes including why governing boards might find recruiting and retaining young governors a challenge, why governing boards believe having young governors is important, what diverse governing boards have done to attract and adapt for young governors and any successes you may have had in this area. Do ask us any questions, tell us about your challenges or share your story by emailling ygn@nga.org.uk.
