Each year, schools should be reviewing external sources of information to help them consider new ways in which the pupil premium could be spent to improve educational outcomes for disadvantaged pupils. While school staff should lead on drafting a spending plan for the pupil premium each year, the governing board is responsible for ensuring that the pupil premium is spent appropriately and that it is targeted at the right pupils.
One essential resource that both staff and governing boards should be using is the Sutton Trust/Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) Teaching and Learning Toolkit. The aim of this Toolkit is to provide schools with an evidence based guide to the most cost effective initiatives that have the most impact on the attainment and progress of disadvantaged pupils. The toolkit provides a breakdown of different initiatives, including a summary of the average cost of each initiative, the average impact on attainment and the evidence to support these claims.
The EEF is constantly updating its resources based on new evidence into effective ways to spend the pupil premium.
