The NGA encourages all governing boards to regularly review their composition to ensure that it continues to be effective for the size and needs of the school. Often, governing boards will start off considering the question ‘What is the optimum size for the governing board to be effective?’ However, the first things to consider should be ‘What skills do we have and what skills do we need?’ It is very much a ‘quality over quantity’ consideration, although there are minimum requirements for the size of governing boards, as outlined below.
