This is an adapted version of an article written by Sir John Dunford, ex-pupil premium champion for the DfE, which appeared in NGA's bi-monthly Governing Matters magazine.

I have been speaking to governors/trustees, school leaders, local authorities and academy trusts about the pupil premium for 18 months now, as have David Laws, minister of state for schools, and officials from the Department for Education. In that time I’ve seen the sector wake to the opportunity this extra funding offers to schools and increasingly take a carefully planned strategic approach to the use of the money.
