Leadership diagnostics 

These will be completed as pre-work as preparation for the programme

Leadership competencies: 360° diagnostic review

An online tool which will involve colleague input and which will be repeated at the end of the programme to demonstrate progress

Governance knowledge: e-learning diagnostics

Completion of the e-learning diagnostics, and if necessary, completing the module where knowledge gain is required – each module takes about an hour to complete

Board skills’ audit

If not up-to-date, to be completed prior to the first face-to-face session

Leadership development

Face to face sessions which will scaffold the programme

Session 1: Leading governance

A half-day session focusing on strategic leadership, leading the team, managing relationships, building an effective team, creating a healthy structure and succession planning.

Session 2: Delivering effective governance

A half-day session focusing on leading the business in particular financial oversight and analysis of school data, ensuring the organisation’s strategic priorities determine the board’s business, exploring the chair’s sphere of influence and effective communication.

Session 3: Leading school improvement

This half-day session focusing on directing and driving school improvement through leading change, and managing challenging conversations.

Mentoring call 1: Getting started

The mentor will discuss the 360° appraisal and advise on the school based project

Mentoring call 2: Ensuring progress is being made  

The mentor will discuss the second 360° appraisal and areas still be developed; also progress with the school based project and arrangements for observing another board’s meeting

Sustainable networking 

Building peer support

Cluster group: Developing a network

A two hour self-led session rehearsing action learning sets as a tool for structuring supportive networks

Observing a board meeting

Arranging with a colleague on a reciprocal basis to observe another governing board meeting

Implementing change

Learning into practice

School based project

Running for the duration of the programme, the project will require participants to share the learning with their boards and ensure that the ambitious project delivers measurable improvements, which will increase the boards effectiveness

Evidencing impact

To be completed at the end of the programme and updated two terms later

Impact report

 

A short structured report on how the school based project has impacted on board effectiveness 

Celebration event

Award of certificate

Invitation to an NGA conference within about six months of completion of the programme

An opportunity to publicly acknowledge the commitment to governance development   

Cost

The full cost of this programme is £500. Funding for £500 is available. Please contact NGA to enquire about eligibility for funding that is available.
