NGA Growing Governance 10-years

In 2016 the National Governance Association celebrated its 10-year anniversary. We paid tribute to those who had the vision to create one charity to represent and support the governors and trustees of England’s state schools, and made the time to make that happen in 2006.

One thing that has not changed at NGA since 2006 is our mission: to improve the wellbeing of children and young people in England by promoting high standards in schools and improving the effectiveness of their governance.

“I am immensely proud to be NGA’s Chair as we celebrate our 10-year anniversary. I am delighted that more than 20 individuals can now say they work for the NGA, and I’m delighted that year on year, our membership numbers continue to rise and so more schools benefit from their hard work”.  - Ian Courtney, Chair of the National Governance Association

Since our inception in 2006, and under the direction of our board of trustees and 3 Chief Executives, we are proud to have grown into the leading voice for school governors and trustees across England.

Beginning with a very small staff team in 2006, NGA has grown to have over 55,000 members, 21 staff and 26 consultants. NGA now has over a quarter of state schools in England in membership, so there is still room for many more to join us.

We have built a comprehensive, expert service for our members and provide a national platform for governors, trustees and clerks, all in the name of improving governance. We do this through:

Nevertheless, the anniversary celebrations are not just about the work and growth of the NGA. They are about saluting all those who give their time to govern and Growing Governance across the sector; whether this means growing capacity and improving outcomes for pupils in individual schools, or growing the profile and representing the views of governance on a national stage. This 10-year milestone is an opportunity for us to consider the place of governors and trustees in today’s education system, to take stock, and to look forward to growing the profile of governance as well as continuing to spread good practice over the coming years.

“Celebrating our 10-year anniversary in not just to congratulate ourselves on the progress made but to take stock, reflect and see what else we can do to support our members in improving practice. There is a revolution in school governance taking place. Building on the collective endeavour and wisdom of our members, we aim for NGA to be the vanguard”. - Emma Knights, Chief Executive of the NGA

We are proud to partner many major organisations across England, which over the years have helped us deliver better understanding and practice across the education sector:

“It is completely fitting that the NGA is a key partner within the development of the Foundation for Leadership in Education (FLE). Governance is absolutely central to the FLE’s mission of improving education in England and Wales through high-quality leadership.” Allan Foulds, President, ASCL

“The professional support, advice and training available from NGA is hugely significant and validates their rightful place in the Foundation for Leadership in Education. Their 10-year anniversary is a milestone that should be celebrated with pride and a real sense they have much to offer education in the years ahead”. Kim Johnson, NAHT National President

“NGA throughout its 10-year history has played a significant role supporting school governors, trustees and clerks. It has been our pleasure to work with NGA for much of this time, particularly in providing legal support to NGA members through the GOLDline service alongside the NGA advice team.” Richard Freeth, Partner, Browne Jacobson LLP.

“FFT is delighted to have been working with NGA since 2012 to help governors make better use of school performance data. Working together has ensured that governors have been fully involved in the development of the FFT Governor Dashboard. The dashboard is now being used by 70% of schools, providing governors and school leaders with a much better understanding of school performance data.” Paul Charman, Managing Director, Fischer Family Trust

“We were delighted to work closely with the NGA in establishing the Inspiring Governors Alliance to celebrate the valuable role played by school governors and encourage more people to volunteer. We look forward to extending this partnership in 2016 and beyond to place and support our excellent recruits.” Nick Chambers, Director, Education and Employers Taskforce

“I would like to thank the National Governance Association for relentlessly pushing the issues that matter most to school governors, trustees and clerks. One of the most impressive things about our group is that there seems to be willingness from across the political divide to join our meetings to talk about governance.” Neil Carmichael MP
