Clerking Conference 2021

Tuesday 30 March 2021

10:00 - 12:30

This conference will provide clerks and other governance professionals serving schools and academy trusts with access to the latest insight on the role as well as legal and practice updates.

Day one (30 March) will begin with an update from Emma Knights on NGA’s Clerking Matters campaign, along with a DfE update on the department’s clerking priorities, delivered by Lesley Jones (Deputy Director of the Governance, Intervention, Faith and Accountability Division) and Dawn Samwell (Governance Policy Lead). This will be followed by a panel discussion on ‘learning from 2020 and looking forward’, reflecting on what went well and how to build learning from COVID into the new normal. Panellists include Samantha Dossetter (Nexus Education Schools Trust), Tajinder Juss (Cheshire East Council), Peter Swabey (ICSA / The Chartered Governance Institute) and Amy Wright (NGA’s Clerking Development Manager).

Day two (31 March) will feature a legal update from Mark Blois, Head of Education at Browne Jacobson, NGA’s legal partners, followed by short practical sessions aimed at improving clerking practice. The first of these will be an introduction to risk management for governance professionals. The second session will focus on how those clerking can influence their boards’ approaches to recruitment and induction. Finally, we will highlight some of the ways NGA can support you in your role.

The conference will take place between 10am and 12.30pm each day via Zoom.
