Release date: 11/04/2022

Members of the National Governance Association (NGA) can now access robust, affordable, salary benchmarking through a new partnership with Pay in Education (PiE).

Offered at a discount to those with NGA membership, the service is designed to support trusts and schools make informed decisions on how to spend the pay budget. The PiE salary benchmarking tool is available for MATs, single academy trusts and maintained schools. PiE’s approach ensures users can access data which is appropriate, tailored, and relevant, whilst ensuring GDPR compliance and anonymity of data.

Executive pay, in particular in academy trusts, has been a reoccurring issue for the sector in recent years. NGA has sought to establish further support for boards on setting pay following the release of its  guidance on executive pay. NGA have partnered with PiE to ensure boards can access ethical and responsible pay benchmarking, through a service with expertise in reward and education and understanding of the nuances of benchmarking salaries in the education sector.

NGA members can find out more about what PiE offers via the PiE website or can enquire about a quote for an annual subscription with the discount by emailing subscriptions@payineducation.co.uk.

Sam Henson, director of policy and communications at the National Governance Association said: “Many trust leaders themselves have driven the call for a more transparent, ethical, and accountable approach to setting executive pay that doesn’t play into a race to the top, when the top is astronomically high.  While every organisation is unique, making comparisons with executive pay structures in similar sized organisation, working in a similar context, can be achieved through this benchmarking tool. It will be incredibly helpful for the sector and alongside the increased and welcome guidance and scrutiny from the ESFA, it will continue to help the sector manage executive pay responsibly and demonstrate changing attitudes.”

Sharon O’Ryan, Founder and CEO of Pay in Education said:Providing affordable access to data comparisons which are tailored and relevant to the context of the individual school or trust is at the heart of PiE’s approach – we see a close correlation for example between executive salaries and trust size and pupil numbers so considering that contextual detail is imperative - only then can you be assured of benchmarking responsibly and making decisions which are appropriately underpinned, and stand up to scrutiny.”
