NGA Leading Governance programmes for chairs, clerks & boards funded by DfE

Develop your leadership skills and confidence. Lead and support your governing board to have real impact on your school’s improvement.

The Department for Education (DfE) has appointed the National Governance Association (NGA) to deliver governance leadership development programmes for chairs, clerks and boards.

Learning Link - e-learning for governors, trustees and clerks

NGA has teamed up with Virtual College to deliver Learning Link, an innovative e-learning service. Governors, trustees and clerks can access a catalogue of over 50 interactive online training modules to help you improve your governance skills and knowledge. Key topics include: strategy; team work; assessment; staffing; financial oversight; elements of effective governance; compliance; collaboration, and much more.

With 24/7 multi-device access to course materials, learning can be done at any time, place and pace that suits the learner.

Governance training

Our training programmes are designed to develop the key skills and knowledge necessary for effective governance of schools and federations, academies and multi academy trusts and will be contextualised to the type of role, school or group.

NGA consultancy

Our consultants tailor their approach according to the individual requirements of the school, academy or academy trust. We offer a range of options for reviewing governance structures, appraising the effectiveness of the governing board and building an ambitious and constructive school vision.

Developing effective governance in your multi academy trust
Whether you are looking for an expert external review of your MAT’s governance arrangements, require assistance in developing the MAT’s scheme of delegation including advising on how to work with and develop your academy committees, or simply require roles and responsibilities training for your trustees or academy committee members, NGA can help.
Online self-evaluation tools
We offer a range of online review tools to cover all circumstances including an online board self-review and online chairs’ 360 degree appraisal.

General information

  • All our work is carried out by consultants who are carefully recruited and quality assured.
  • On commissioning training or consultancy from NGA, the consultant will contact you directly to make the practical arrangements.
  • Most of our consultants are able to offer twilight, evening and Saturday morning sessions, often at short notice.
  • Consultants will need to be able to connect to a screen for the presentation aspect of the session, and will also need a flipchart and pens. Refreshments for participants are always very welcome.
  • Consultants will either bring with them the materials for the session, or will arrange for them to be delivered to the venue in good time.
  • Our fees are inclusive of the consultant’s travel, incidental expenses and materials. There will be no additional charges.
  • In the event that a client cancels a session, a cancellation fee will be charged to cover time booked out, preparation and administration costs incurred.
  • We expect the clerk to the governing board and the senior leadership team to be present.
  • Much of our work is suitable for both schools and academies and we usually use the term school to mean either.  Some of our sessions are also particularly suitable for groups of schools and/or academies to share.  Work with multi academy trusts will be bespoke to the trust and the consultant will be knowledgeable and experienced in MAT governance.
  • Your feedback is important to us and we will seek feedback from participants.  If there are any issues, we ask that you contact either Clare Collins (Head of Consultancy) at or Paul Aber (Head of Training Development) at
  • We value relationships and so if you would like a consultant you’ve already worked with to work with you again, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate your request.
