With the number of exclusions rising, negative outcomes for young people are a reality. Therefore, governors need to ensure that they have done all they can to support the young person in question.

In this thought-provoking bitesize module, you will consider your own stance on permanent exclusions by:

  • Examining an example of an exclusions case as a governor on the panel
  • Assessing your own initial responses to poor pupil behavior
  • Thinking about how your school’s behaviour policy is implemented and monitored by governors, how your school supports vulnerable young people and the latest thinking, impact and trends in relation to permanent exclusions from the latest Timpson review

If your school is subscribed to Learning Link, you can find this module in the ‘Learning’ section of your account, under the Pupil Success and Wellbeing category.

Our subject matter expertise

The content of this module has been written by our in-house subject matter experts:

Emma Balchin – Director of Professional Development

As well as being NGA's director of professional development, Emma has over 20 years' experience in education, leadership and school improvement.  She is currently chair of a pupil referral unit which she supported on its improvement journey from special measures to good.  Part of this improvement was ensuring adequate admission arrangements and outreach support to mainstream settings were in place, to ensure the PRU was an effective intervention, not an educational destination.  She is passionate about reducing exclusions to give some of the most vulnerable children in society better life chances.

Dr Samuel Tranter – Senior Advice Officer

Sam is a senior advice officer at the NGA. He provides advice to Gold members via email and telephone, alongside writing for the website, magazine and weekly newsletter.  Exclusions are one of Sam’s specialist policy areas and he has experience of sitting on exclusion panels and regularly meets with the DfE exclusions team to provide feedback and discuss policy developments.
