Session impact

If your governing body is considering forming or joining a multi academy trust (MAT), then this session is integral to ensuring you have factored in all the risks, challenges and benefits of doing so.

As the leading independent source of information and support for school governance, we recommend all boards attend this session before any formal decisions are made.

The purpose of the session

The decision to form or join a MAT is one of the biggest decisions the governing board of a maintained school, or the trust board of a single academy trust will make.  At the end of the session, participants should be clear about the issues they need to consider when forming or joining a MAT, how governance in MATs works, and how governance and leadership structures will change.

What will the session cover?

  1. Current challenges for schools and trusts
  2. Why vision and ethos matter
  3. The legalities and the role of the trust board in a MAT
  4. Lines of accountability – some models
  5. Possible next steps

Who should attend?

Governors of maintained schools and trustees of single academy trusts

The clerk

The senior leadership team
