Session impact

Whether you’re new to governance or have experience, the purpose remains the same – to ensure our schools give children the best education possible.

This training can be used as an induction for new starters or alternatively as a refresher course to ensure everyone in governance has the knowledge and skills to carry out their role effectively.

The purpose of the session

Taking on the role of governing a school is a big responsibility; those who do so want to make a real contribution to ensuring better outcomes for pupils.  We know that governing schools is complex and to be effective a good knowledge of the education sector is required - specifically in the areas of school performance and school funding.  This programme is designed to give you a good grounding of the role and responsibilities, and the knowledge that is needed to become a catalyst for strong governance.

  1. Types of schools, governance structures, the role and core functions and responsibilities of a board
  2. Being strategic
  3. School funding
  4. School performance
  5. The principles of effective governance

Who should attend?

New governors, trustees and academy committee members

Governors and trustees in need of a refresher

Senior leaders who will be taking on a governance role or who wish to learn more about governance

New clerks

How will the session work?

The course is made up of five modules which can be delivered as a whole day or as two half day sessions

All NGA face to face training is interactive so there will be activities and opportunities for discussion and Q&A

The programme involves both pre-work and post session tasks
