The purpose of the session

Taking on the role of governing a school as a local governing body member of a multi academy trust is a big responsibility and most who do so want to make a real contribution to ensuring better outcomes for pupils. However, governing schools is complex and to be effective a sound knowledge of your governance structure and your own role and responsibilities within that is required as roles and responsibilities of those governing at local level does vary considerably. This course is designed to give all participants a good grounding in the extent of their role and responsibilities in their school, and the knowledge that they need to become effective within six months of taking on the role.

  1. How governance in multi academy trusts works
  2. How governance works in your own trust
  3. How the scheme of delegation works in practice
  4. The role and responsibilities of your own governing body
  5. The principles of effective governance

Who should attend?

  • New academy committee (local governing body) members
  • Those members in need of a refresher
  • Senior leaders who will be taking on a governance role or who wish to learn more about governance
  • New clerks

How will the session work?

  • The session is made up of one three hour module
  • All NGA face to face training is interactive and so there will be activities and opportunities for discussion and Q&A
  • The programme involves both pre-work and post session tasks
