Governance Leadership Forum - A debate: To pay or not to pay for governance?
This topic was last debated fully by NGA and others in 2015, and at that time the governance community was clearly on the side of not paying school governors and academy trustees. But a lot has changed since then, and NGA members are now divided on whether remuneration should be considered.
NGA has always been an advocate of the voluntary principle, but the possibility of payment was one of the few suggestions for change which came from our exploration of governance workload. With recruitment and retention of volunteers becoming even more challenging, is there a risk that governance may become unsustainable?
