Governance professionals, including those who clerk governing boards, make a valuable contribution to our education system.

The Department for Education (DfE) Clerking Competency Framework is non-statutory guidance setting out the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to deliver professional clerking.

The framework highlights the breadth of the clerking role which includes providing governing boards with expert advice on governance, procedures and compliance, and directly contributing to efficient board conduct.

This page covers:

  • the competencies featured in the framework
  • how to use the Clerking Competency Framework
  • understanding governance professional roles
