Stephen Brierley

NGA Consultant

Stephen is an NGA consultant with 20 years of experience in secondary school leadership and governance as headteacher or principal of three Anglican secondary schools.

He is now the governance professional for a small multi academy trust working with a disadvantaged community in Manchester.

Stephen is also chair of governors at a secondary school in Bury and a primary school in Bolton, and a trustee of a MAT in Rochdale.

An experienced trade unionist, he served on ASCL’s executive for more than 15 years and as a local representative on several joint consultative and negotiation committees.

Across all his roles, Stephen enjoys providing training for governors and informal support for his peers, and is starting to do this more formally through his consultancy work.

Strong, collaborative relationships are at the heart of Stephen’s work and he uses his insight as a school leader to help governors offer even deeper challenge and support. In his view, these relationships underpin not just impactful governance, but impactful education too.
