Join us this autumn for our next SEND Network session, bringing together those involved in SEND governance to connect with colleagues, share experiences and discuss current issues affecting pupils with special educational needs and disabilities.
The session will provide an opportunity to exchange information, share good practice and explore the challenges and opportunities facing governing boards as they undertake their SEND-related responsibilities.
What to expect
With the first phase of SEND reform rollout now underway, we are pleased to be joined by Claire Burton, DfE Director of SEND & AP.
Claire will lead a discussion on the expectations of governing boards this academic year, including oversight of funding, inclusion strategies and estates. The session will provide an overview of key areas boards should be focusing on this year as the SEND reforms progress.
We will also hear from Aaron King, Inclusion Advisor at 9000lives, who brings years of experience working with young people in both mainstream and specialist settings. Aaron will share practical advice and best practice on the development and oversight of effective inclusion strategies, as well as insights from his experiences on the frontline.

Claire Burton is the Director of SEND and Alternative Provision at the Department for Education, which includes the Senior Responsible Officer overseeing the SEND Reform programme and SEND policy within the Department.
Inclusion Advisor, 9000lives
With over 25 years’ of working with children & young people in both mainstream and SEND settings, Aaron is the force behind 9000 Lives. Aaron has written for TES, National Governance Association and Teach Primary. His work on inclusion has been featured in Schools Week. He has also been a school governor for 16 years. His SEND advice is recommended in DfE guides for maintained schools and academies.
