These modules aim to help you improve the effectiveness of your governing board, including visiting your school or schools, Ofsted inspections and succession planning.

  • Build relationships with your senior executive team
  • Engage effectively with stakeholders including parents, staff, the community and employers

Handling difficult situations

This module will help you to:

  • Know what kind of problems may arise in a governing board
  • Understand the role of different people on the governing board in trying to resolve difficulties and disputes
  • Understand what contribution you can make in supporting the governing board in tackling these problems

Ofsted inspection of schools

This module will help you to:

  • Understand the inspection process
  • Understand what Ofsted requires of the school and governing board
  • Understand the evidence on which inspectors base their judgements
  • Understand the implications for schools and governing boards
  • Understand the criteria by which your board will be judged
  • Be better enabled to ask appropriate questions of the headteacher and senior staff, as part of holding them to account.

Governance monitoring: A tool to help drive improvement

This module will help you to:

  • Assess how well you currently undertake monitoring as part of your governance role, and identify what you can do to make it even better
  • Take you through 10 lead questions related to effective monitoring
  • Generate a suggested action plan template for you to download and keep, as well as providing you with a handy checklist

This module will help you to:

  • Enable you and your board to make the best use of visits to school
  • Ensure that visits are well planned, focussed on school or trust priorities and make a positive difference
  • Provide you with useful downloadable resources such as an editable visits policy and a template to help you record your visits

Succession planning

This module will help you to:

  • Understand the importance and principles of succession planning
  • Review the characteristics of good chairing
  • Reflect on barriers that might hinder succession planning
  • Develop a suitable structure for succession with their own board
  • Become equipped with takeaway tools, strategies and knowledge to plan for the future of their board.

  • Understand when a courageous conversation is needed

This module will help you to:

  • Understand when a courageous conversation is needed
  • Explore what planning is needed prior to undertaking a courageous conversation
  • Understand how to deal with defensiveness and denial
  • Asses what to do after a courageous conversation has taken place

Ethical Leadership: A planning tool
Ethical Leadership: A planning tool +

This module introduces the idea of the Framework for ethical leadership governance in education and provides a practical ‘audit-style’ tool for you to undertake with your board and school/trust leaders.

By the end of the audit tool you will:

  • Be able to identify how your school or trust embeds the ethical leadership principles in practice
  • Identify which principles need further development and establish ways of measuring the success of this development over time
  • Be able to use reflective practice and develop examples as a leadership team as evidence of ethical leadership
