Poverty, place and power

Governing Matters
01/03/2023

The Fair Education Alliance brings together 250 member organisations to tackle educational inequality.

The current moment is the most crucial in years – perhaps in a generation – for our movement. The context we find ourselves in is worrying and stands to get worse. The disadvantage gap (the gap in educational outcomes between poorer pupils and their wealthier counterparts) in England is at its highest point in a decade.

In 2021, this gap increased by the greatest amount on record. We face large and growing rates of child poverty, as well as a cost-of-living crisis that sees school budgets stretched ever thinner. We’re also seeing this rising poverty compound the effects of the pandemic, resulting in elevated psychological distress for young people.
