Session impact

Understanding the governance role in monitoring performance and standards and having a basic knowledge of data sources is one thing. Being able to use your own school organisation's data to understand how it is performing in terms of progress and attainment and the areas in which it needs to improve is another.

This session has been designed to improve your understanding and skills in this area to enable you to govern effectively.

The purpose of the session

As a member of a governing board, data is an essential asset in enabling you to understand how your school is performing.

By the end of the session your board will have a clear understanding of the key sources of data relevant for your school, what these reveal about key standards, areas of weakness and strength, and how to use them moving forward to set and monitor strategic priorities.

What will the session cover?

1. The current context for governance

2. Department for Education Performance Tables

3. Analyse School Performance

4. Fischer Family Trust Governance Dashboard

5. Internal in-year data

6. Next steps

Who should attend?

Governors, trustees and academy committee members

The senior leadership team

Please note that this session assumes that those attending have a sound basic understanding of data sources and how they can be used. This could for example have been obtained either through:

  • having already attended NGA’s "Introduction to school data" session
  • completing “Progress and attainment : using data to improve school outcomes” from NGA’s Learning Link
  • reading NGA’s guidance “Knowing your school: the FFT Dashboard for governors and trustees”.

How will the session work?

This is a half-day session i.e. around three hours will be needed to achieve the session’s purpose

This session can be delivered as an ‘away day’ type event, allowing half a day

The session will be preceded by the consultant liaising by phone with the chair to ensure that the session is bespoke to the school organisation’s own data

All NGA sessions are interactive and provide information, activities and opportunities for discussion
