Relationships and sex education (RSE) and health education
Providing young people with the information they need to build healthy relationships and to make informed decisions about their bodies and lives.
UPDATE: The DfE published new statutory guidance on relationships education, relationships and sex education (RSE) and health education on 15 July 2025. Schools will have until September 2026 to reflect new requirements set out in the guidance.
We're working on updates to NGA guidance and resources in line with the new guidance. In the meantime, you may wish to refer to the PSHE association's initial update.
A good quality RSE curriculum provides young people with the information they need to build healthy relationships with others and to make informed decisions about their bodies and lives.
Our RSE guide supports governing boards to fulfil their role in ensuring that RSE is provided in their school/trust and meets the needs of all pupils. It covers:
- The legal duties relating to RSE
- What does RSE aim to achieve?
- What does good RSE look like?
- The role of governing boards
- Developing an effective policy
- Allocating sufficient resources
- Monitoring RSE in your school or trust
