To support governing boards in welcoming new governors and trustees to their role, the National Governance Association (NGA) has introduced a new benefit for GOLD and MAT members – Welcome to Governance live.

Designed to complement both induction training provided locally and NGA’s Welcome to Governance handbook, the Welcome to Governance live session will focus on how new governors and trustees can make an impact in the first six months of their role.

A one-off virtual session for each new volunteer will cover what to expect including positives and challenges, and how to support the school/trust to achieve its vision. Sessions will be held by school type covering maintained schools, MAT board trustees, SAT board trustees and local academy committees within a MAT.

When a new governor/trustee joins the board, they can register for a free session on the Welcome to Governance LIVE booking page.

Emma Balchin, director of professional development at NGA said:

“Wanting to make a positive difference for children and young people is the single biggest reason people volunteer as a governor or trustee. This new session will help them to connect that motivation with practical ways of quickly making an impact in the role, so that volunteers feel valuable and engaged. High-quality induction is crucial in raising the effectiveness of governance, so I am pleased that these sessions will highlight support available and help to give volunteers a confident start in their role.”
