Governing boards, as the responsible body, have a duty to comply with The Equality Act 2010 which applies to all schools and trusts. The Act protects pupils and staff against discrimination, harassment, and/or victimisation based on nine protected characteristics.

Governing boards are responsible for ensuring the policies adopted by their school/trust, which inform practice and decision making, are both inclusive and meet the requirements of the Equality Act.

Our equality and diversity guide explains how boards fulfil their responsibilities in law and also their role as strategic leaders in creating a whole school culture of equality and inclusion.

The guide covers:

  • an overview of governing board duties
  • how to comply with the Public Sector Equality Duty
  • publishing equality information
  • making reasonable adjustments
  • the board’s duty as employer
  • building a culture that champions equality and inclusion
  • assessing the impact of equality strategies
