Supporting executive leader development
How c can invest in and support school/trust leaders to access the CPD they need
Governing boards have an important role in supporting the professional development of the senior executive leader – the headteacher in a maintained school or the chief executive officer (CEO) in an academy trust.
In particular, the chair and executive leader appraisal panel should support the executive leader to identify and access the continuing professional development (CPD) and learning they need to build their capacity and expertise. This should be prioritised alongside their work-life balance, physical and mental health, and emotional wellbeing.
This guide outlines ways in which governing boards can invest in and positively influence the executive leader’s CPD. It covers:
- induction for new executive leaders
- ongoing CPD
- mentoring and coaching
- conversations about CPD
