Falling pupil numbers
Guidance to support governing boards managing falling pupil rolls.
Schools are increasingly facing a decline in pupil numbers/rolls. As funding is tied to pupil numbers, this poses a real and significant risk to the financial sustainability of many schools.
Where falling rolls affects your school or trust, it is crucial that the governing board proactively addresses the issue and ensures action is taken where necessary to avoid deficit and protect the long-term viability of the organisation.
Our guidance sets out areas for consideration that the governing board can discuss with senior leaders at meetings.Â
The guide covers:
- pupil number forecasts
- taking action to manage falling rolls
- working with key stakeholders
