Leading a school or trust is one of the most rewarding and challenging roles in public service. A leader who takes their own development seriously is more likely to influence others to do the same.

Chairs have an important role in supporting their leader to access the continuing professional development (CPD) they need to build their capacity and expertise. Their development should be prioritised alongside achieving a work-life balance, good physical and mental health, and emotional wellbeing.

Our guide outlines ways in which chairs can invest in and support leader CPD. Purposeful conversations between the chair and executive leader are crucial – this guide introduces CPD themes to help structure these discussions.

This guide for chairs covers:

  • laying foundations through induction
  • supporting ongoing CPD
  • the benefits of mentoring and coaching
  • themes to guide discussions around CPD

The guide was written in partnership with HeadsUp4HTs, a network that aims to celebrate and promote the invaluable work of school leaders.
