Recruiting the headteacher of a school or the CEO of a trust is one of the most important tasks that governing boards undertake.

Our guide to recruiting a headteacher was developed in partnership with the Department for Education (DfE) and can be applied by trust boards recruiting a CEO, as well as to a range of other leadership roles in a school or trust. It covers each stage of the recruitment process, from planning and advertisement to appointment.

Use our toolkit alongside the guide for further advice as well as practical tools and templates to save time and ensure an effective recruitment process.

Our executive leader recruitment toolkit covers:

  • aligning the recruitment process to your vision and strategy
  • fair and inclusive recruitment
  • support and specialist advice
  • appointing a selection panel
  • job description and person specification (templates provided)
  • the advertisement and application pack
  • using a recruitment agency
  • shortlisting
  • interview questions
  • reaching a decision
  • post appointment actions

The toolkit is designed to be used alongside Recruiting a headteacher guidance, which was developed jointly by NGA and the Department for Education (DfE).

The toolkit and guidance are suitable for all types of school and governance structure.
