Approving your charging and remissions policy

The charging and remissions policy sets out when charges can be made and when voluntary contributions can be asked for.

All schools must have a charging and remissions policy which details each type of activity that can be charged for. The policy sets out when charges can be made, circumstances in which charges are remitted (cancelled), and when voluntary contributions can be asked for.

The policy should be approved by the governing board (approval can be delegated to a committee) and reviewed annually. School leaders are responsible for drafting and implementing the policy.

This page covers:

  • questions to ask when reviewing the policy
  • legal requirements that the policy must comply with
  • what schools cannot charge for
  • what schools can charge for
  • voluntary contributions
