HR self-assessment: a tool for governing boards
Evaluate the extent to which your board is carrying out its employer responsibilities in an effective way
Despite some governing boards not being the ‘legal employer’ of staff in their school, all governing boards have significant responsibilities as employers.
Paramount among these is the responsibility to support the wellbeing of staff, including their work-life balance. A healthy workplace culture is crucial to making the school or trust a great place to work and can also have a positive impact on recruiting and retaining staff.
Our HR self-assessment tool contains questions and statements for the governing board to discuss and consider the extent to which they are carrying out their employer responsibilities in an effective way.
We suggest that boards delegate the task of completing the tool to a small working group or the staffing committee who should report back on their findings.
The self-assessment focuses on:
- How does your board gain insights into employment issues and workplace culture?
- Does your board value and support its employees, and is this reflected in its approach to wellbeing and retention?
- Does your board use independent external support?
An HR checklist accompanies this tool, featuring key areas of compliance and good practice activities that every board should maintain.
