School admissions: the governing board's role

Understand what determining admissions arrangements means in practice.

Guidance
20/08/2021

Governing boards who act as admission authorities – and are therefore responsible for admission arrangements in their school/trust – need to ensure compliance with The School Admissions Code.

In practice this involves:

  • determining admission arrangements that are fair and transparent, particularly for vulnerable or disadvantaged children
  • ensuring that admission arrangements are published (on the school/trust website)
  • consulting on any changes to admission arrangements, and where no changes are made, consulting at least every seven years
