The Department for Education (DfE) governance guides make clear that an effective governing board builds relationships with parents and other stakeholders to create a sense of trust and shared ownership of the school/trust strategy and its vision.

Governing boards that are visible to parents also gain more credibility and ‘buy in’ to the role of the board.

We recommend that governing boards provide a report to parents each year that outlines progress towards achieving their strategic priorities. This is an opportunity to celebrate successes, acknowledge challenges that require collective ownership, and for parents to give their feedback.

Use our template as a starting point to help construct your own report.

Our annual report template includes:

  • meet the governing board
  • the role of the governing board
  • school/trust aims and progress
