Governor/trustee one-to-ones are informal discussions where the chair or vice chair meets with each board member on an annual basis.

It can help identify changes that can be made to enable board members to fully participate in and most effectively contribute to governance business as well as to improve the workings of the board.

It is also an opportunity to thank colleagues for their time and effort and can help establish good communication and relationships.

The conversation might cover:

  • understanding of the governance role
  • training and development needs
  • how board practice and relationships can be improved
  • elements of the role and that are working well and where there might be concerns
