While governing boards should remain strategic, one area where there is an operational element is managing the headteacher and the governance professional; the headteacher is responsible for managing all other staff (apart from the governance professional). Managing the headteacher and governance professional is relatively straightforward when things are going well but becomes much more difficult if they are not. In cases of prolonged underperformance, a capability procedure might be necessary to address these concerns.
