Governing boards have a statutory duty to promote the wellbeing of pupils, including mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Positive mental health and wellbeing are fundamental to children feeling safe, connected and motivated to engage with school life. Schools and trusts that create supportive environments are better placed to remove barriers to learning and enable pupils to thrive.

Our guidance covers the board’s responsibilities and how to create a whole school approach to pupil mental health and wellbeing, including:

  • understanding your pupils
  • curriculum and enrichment
  • staff responsibility
  • parental engagement
  • working with external services
  • targeted support and referrals
